Data Migration is a complex project and usually involves several teams of people, including the Users, the IT staff, the Consultants & the Auditors. This makes it difficult to manage, as everyone needs to be aligned to the goals of the project. Some of the considerations in migration of the Source (current) data to the Target (future) application are

• The users' data needs in the future
• The target application's data structure & method of data loading
• The location of required data in the source applications
• The validation for correctness of source data
• The mapping and transformation requirements between the source and target
• The audit, balance & control requirements to ensure that data is correct

There is also a lot of focus on keeping the implementation period as short as possible to reduce the disruption to the business. A manual approach to data migration will be very time consuming, both to develop data migration programs as well as keep changing them as the scope and requirements change.
